Hairstyles for more mature women don’t have to be about thinning, gray frizz and dowdy styles. Just as for younger women, your hair is all about adjusting to what works for you.
"Here’s what’s tricky about hair and age, it’s such a sensitive subject,” said Lacey Walker, owner of Frenchy’s Beauty Parlor in Burbank, California. “Usually when you read magazines, they say things like when you get over a certain age you should cut your hair off. I don’t necessarily believe those things. I feel like they’re rules that were written somewhere just to write rules and women feel like they have to comply with it. I truly think that basically you have to listen to your hair. I think that when women listen to their hair as they age, it gets a lot easier.”
But once you listen to your hair, how do you answer back?

Two of the major hair problems women have as they age are thinning and graying. Luckily, a little dye job can take care of both.
“Believe it or not, color is a great way to (add) a healthy amount of volume to hair,” said stylist Kim Vo, a judge on Bravo TV’s “Shear Genius” hairstyling reality competition show and owner of the Kim Vo salon chain. “A lot of times clients will get highlights just to add volume, just to give it a little thickness as (the gray) grows in.”
I think finally accepting your hair with curls and not flat ironing and straightening is so lovely now. Before you could cut into the curls to make it more edgy. I call them lobs -- long bobs.

If you do color treat your hair, Vo said, you should resist the temptation to wash it every day -- not the easiest challenge if you have thin, limp locks.
“If you wash it every day, you’ll trigger oil glands where your scalp will be oily,” he said.
Better to stick with a shampoo every other day (or, better still, every three days) and spray some dry shampoo on your roots on off days to add some volume, Vo said, and to wash in the morning to avoid an extra case of bed head.
When it is time to shampoo, look for products that are anti-aging, said Los Angeles-based stylist Lesley Hall, who can be found at Ali’s Hair Salon near UCLA.

“As we age, our bodies will produce less estrogen and progesterone, causing our hair to get finer and grow slower,” Hall said. “Using an anti-aging shampoo along with conditioning treatments will minimize the noticeable signs of aging hair. Because hormones affect hair, women need different nutrients for their hair as it ages. Along with slowing down the hair from aging prematurely, these topical products are designed specifically to nourish maturing hair.”

Color isn't the only challenge with graying hair; coarseness can be a problem, too.

“(Women) assume when they color it, it’s going to soften the cuticle,” said Walker of Frenchy’s salon. “But it actually doesn’t. With that, you want to find a complementing product that’s going to make your hair feel softer.”

Not sure whether a full dye job is right for you? Vo said he has a lot of clients who are proving a little can go a long way.

“We’ve had a bunch of new clients getting streaks in their hair -- my mom being one of them,” he said. “I think (more mature women) like their highlights really to be shown versus the subtleties and the natural. They want people to say, 'I love your highlights' versus your hair looks great or you look great.”
