THE WORDS AND PHRASES Internet users around the world type into the browsers of their computers and smartphones provide valuable insights into the things people are thinking about, and the questions they most want answered. Queries about the hairstyles of black celebrities is one of the topics that produces many thousands of monthly Internet search queries from across the globe.
TOP 10 BLACK HAIRSTYLES
Working on a new edition of my book Black Beauty, I wanted to find out which black celebrity had the most Googled hair. This years top 10 turned out to be a diverse group, consisting of eight music artists, six actresses, two TV presenters, one supermodel and one First Lady; (you can guess who). The list is almost exclusively African American, with three black Brits — Naomi Campbell, Leona Lewis and Thandie Newton.
The top 10 also yields some surprises — Michelle Obama’s hair is more popular than Naomi Campbell’s for example, and Halle Berry’s short cropped hairstyle beats Tyra Banks ever shifting weave styles.
RIHANNA'S HAIRSTYLES SECOND
Last year's winner was music diva Rihanna, with 18,000 monthly searches, but this year Beyonce wins out, with a massive 40,500 monthly searches for the term “Beyonce hair”. Her ranking was boosted recently by a concert in which her hair got caught in a fan while performing onstage. The incident send many fans to their digital devices in search of information on the incident, thereby boosting her ranking. Will the recording artist still be number one in 2014? Watch this space.
