The pompadour is an all-time classic hairstyle that was actually named after the mistress of King Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour. After being adopted by fashionable women in the 18th century, it remained a female dominated style right the way up until World War I.

However, during the 1950s Elvis sported the pompadour as part of his signature look and the rest, as they say, is history. Still considered a classic rockabilly/rock ‘n’ roll-inspired hairstyle due to this connection, the traditional pompadour is styled by sweeping the hair upwards and away from the face, often worn slick with swept back sides.

That being said, the style has evolved quite dramatically since the King’s heyday, with modern takes on the pompadour experimenting with length through the top while keeping the back and sides sharp and short.

This haircut is a lot more flexible than you would first imagine and suits many face shapes and hair types. Seen sporting an expertly styled pompadour in his superb editorial for T Magazine, shot by none other than Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Hedi Slimane, the cut became an instant classic, with images of the shoot spreading like wildfire on social networks, menswear blogs and tumblrs across the world.

Men immediately clamoured to get the look, which was the epitome of classic with a contemporary twist. Keeping the sides short and tight while leaving length through the top, it’s still one of the best examples we’ve seen to date:

The management of baldness is a multidisciplinary effort that spans the medical, pharmaceutical, food supplement, exercise and fashion industries. Androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium are the primary nonscarring alopecias.[1] The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenic alopecia, the early stages of which can be slowed or reversed with medication, while more advanced cases may be amenable to hair transplantation. Alopecia areata presents as focal discoid patches of hair loss, and affects up to 2% of the U.S. population, occurring more often in children. Telogen effluvium can occur after stressful events, including severe illness, childbirth, or high fever, and can be seen with certain medications or deficiency of iron, particularly in females.[1] Thyroid dysfunction, both when increased and decreased, can lead to specific patterns of hair loss.Exercise can impact androgenic hair loss at least partially by affecting androgen and estrogen levels.
Quantification of androgen indices in response to exercise can be understood in four categories: short versus long term, and anaerobic versus aerobic. These are indirect assays of exercise impact on hair loss, although the ability of exogenous androgen to worsen or precipitate miniaturization in the genetically predisposed is well documented.[12] Investigations have been either self-report, or cross-sectional and cohort studies with exercise and serum hormonal indices, but no phase III clinical trials. In some studies, conflicting results are thought related to differences in exercise mode, volume, or physical condition of subjects.[13]
In cross-sectional analyses, aerobic exercisers have lower basal total and free testosterone compared to the sedentary.[14][15][16][17] Anaerobic exercisers also have lower testosterone compared to the sedentary[14] but a slight increase in basal testosterone with resistance training over time.[18] Acutely, testosterone briefly increases when comparing aerobic, anaerobic and mixed forms of exercise.[19] A study assessed men who were resistance trained, endurance trained, or sedentary in which they either rested, ran or did a resistance session. Androgens increased in response to exercise, particularly resistance, while cortisol only increased with resistance. After initial post-exercise increase, there was decline in free and total testosterone during resistance recovery, particularly in resistance-trained subjects. Endurance-trained subjects showed less change in hormone levels in response to exercise than resistance-trained subjects.[20] Another study found relative short term effects of aerobic, anaerobic and combined anaerobic-aerobic exercise protocols on hormone levels to not be different. It showed increases in testosterone and cortisol immediately after exercise that returned to baseline in 2 hours.[21]
In trained long term aerobic exercisers, basal androgen levels are unchanged,[22] or decreased.[21][23] Acutely, endurance based aerobic efforts cause testosterone to rise.[24] A year long, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program increased DHT and SHBG in sedentary men age 40-75, but had no effect on other androgens. Both DHT and SHBG increased 14% in exercisers at 3 months, and at 12 months they remained 9% above baseline. SHBG is protective against DHT as it binds free androgen.

Charlotte Murray completed a full three-year apprenticeship at London’s Vidal Sassoon and stayed on as a stylist beginning her involvement with in-house shows, Alternative Hair Show and London Fashion week. She has chiefed shows at London Fashion week designing hair for designer Johan Bester. Every season, she works on teams for numerous other shows including Moshiko Koshino, John Rocha, Blaak, Frost French, Temperly, Taka Nata, Eley Koshimoto, Noel Stewart, Jean-Pierre Braganza and Victim.
She was personal hairdresser to Robbie Williams exclusively from 1997-2001 until he moved to LA. She designed the hair for many of his videos, Rock DJ, KIDS, Millennium, She’s the One and Supreme. During this time she worked on many other music videos with other artists, taking on board the director’s vision, achieving this through her own experience and research.
She has worked with Mario Testino for the front cover of English Vogue. This was shown at the National Portrait Gallery. She has worked on many magazines including Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Tatler, GQ, Cosmopolitan, Sunday Times Style and Nylon with celebrities and models.
Charlotte has also worked on major commercials designing hair for brands such as Impulse, Lynx body spray, Pepsi, Renault, Karl Lagerfeld perfume, Wella, Babyliss, Braun, Samsung, Jasper Conran for Debenhams, GHD, Radox and Nell McAndrew’s “Juice Lady”.
Charlotte’s celebrity clientele includes Rachel Hunter, Martine McCutcheon, Ewan McGregor, Greta Scacchi, Jessica Simpson, Billie Piper, Penny Lancaster, Jennifer Ellison, Katie Price, Ruby Wax, Tamara Mellon, Olivia Williams, Emilia Fox, Trinny and Suzannah and many more.
She worked with numerous celebrities including Graham Norton, Jamie Theakston, Nell McAndrew, Vernon Kaye and June Sarpong for “THE BIG HAIR DO” for Red nose day, sponsored by WELLA.
On a regular basis she presents live hair seminars, on stage, for Clynol for in house shows, Clynol Academy and Salon International showing the latest trends in hair. This involves presenting hair skills in front of a live audience of anything from 50 to 500 people.
She worked on Harry Potter 1V,”The Goblet of Fire” in a daily capacity.
Her strong areas in hair are hair “dressing”, ladies haircutting and styling, temporary extensions and men’s barbering.
She has presented live several times on television on “Big Brother’s Little Brother” and “Celebrity Big Brother”, Channel 4, in hairdressing features on house mates with Dermot O’Leary.
Charlotte has a great enthusiasm and energy for hair and life. She is comfortable working in all aspects of session hairdressing whether it is editorial, film, live presentations or private functions, and relishes a challenge.
Charlotte is currently in the process of opening her first salon in fabulous Muswell Hill, North London. She will have wonderful staff and sell a selection of original art and jewellery. The salon will offer head massage, the latest hair trends, colour, temporary hair extensions, fabulous special occasion hair-up, makeup and bridal services.
